Galatians 5:13
You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.
So far we’ve been embarking on a journey aimed at bringing ourselves to some understanding as to how our salvific walk is to be.
We began with repentance, belief, work of grace and received through faith.
At this point, one would be wondering what then is the place of sin since in spite of all these, sin continues to abound.
I would therefore want to use this morning to address sin.
It is important to understand primarily that the Bible must be rightly divided and properly articulated else we may take stance which may be erroneous.
Apostle Paul introduces a term in his writings called” the sinful nature”
He therefore admonishes the Galatian churches not to use their freedom to indulge the sinful nature.
Paul here and in many places acknowledges that even though in Christ, we have become new creation, there is a principle in man which can make him rebellious against God’s will.
Beloved, Paul says we died to sin so how can we live in it any longer(Rom 6:2). Yes, we died to sin but our new spirit continues to live in an old flesh who is still subjected to sin and its cravings (Rom.7:17-25)
This body is at constant conflict with your spirit man in Christ (Gal. 5:17).
So we preach sin not because we believe in it but we preach sin so that we would be awoken to righteousness(1Cor. 15:34)
We preach sin to bring us to the consciousness that sin shall not have dominion over you for you are under grace and not the law.
We preach sin so that we offer our bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God (Rom. 12:1)
Therefore, it should be a struggle and a difficulty for the Christian to commit sin and no one should explain his sins away by noting that they are only weaknesses.
Beloved, let us deal with our sinful nature by abiding in Christ who is the vine and we, the branches(John 15:1-5)
As long as we abide constantly and continually in Christ, we are laid on the altar of transformation and our sinful nature loses its grip over us.
O that he may increase and we decrease. Selah
SING ALONG
My strength is waning away
Worthless are the counsel of flesh and blood
My hope is built on you my strength
I need you, I need you
I’ve come to the end of myself
Nothing do I hide from you my Lord
Clothe me with your very self
My righteousness, I need you, I need you
